Tokenised money

Tokenised money is value issued as a secure, single-use digital token that a named recipient claims or redeems, used on Energywallet for programme disbursements.

Tokenised money is value issued as a secure digital token. Each token carries a fixed amount, is tied to one recipient, and can be used once.

On Energywallet, businesses and organisations use Token Disbursement to send cash tokens to recipients by SMS. Each token is linked to the recipient's phone number, which keeps the money with the person it was meant for.

A recipient can:

  • Claim it in the app: sign in with the same phone number, go to Top up, and claim the token into your balance.
  • Redeem it for cash: visit an Energywallet agent, who confirms the token with a one-time code sent to your phone.

For the organisation sending the tokens, every step is recorded: issued, delivered, redeemed, where and when. That gives donors and auditors a clear account of where each naira went.
